The Denver Broncos have officially announced the hiring of Darren Rizzi as their special teams coordinator and assistant head coach. Rizzi's appointment comes after a tumultuous season for the Broncos' special teams, marked by high-profile errors in crucial games. Rizzi, who has a storied career as a special teams coordinator, reunites with Broncos head coach Sean Payton, having previously served on Payton's staff with the New Orleans Saints for three seasons.
Rizzi brings with him an impressive resume, having helmed the Saints' special teams for the past six seasons. Prior to his tenure in New Orleans, he dedicated a decade to leading the Miami Dolphins' special teams. His experience and expertise are expected to address the shortcomings of the Broncos' units that have plagued their recent performances. Notably, the Broncos led the league in yards per punt return this season, averaging 15.7 yards, with Marvin Mims Jr. earning All-Pro honors as a returner. Kicker Wil Lutz also tied a franchise record by nailing 31 field goals in a single season.
However, the Broncos' special teams were marred by critical blunders that proved costly in key AFC West matchups. One of the most significant errors occurred on November 10, when a blocked field goal at the buzzer allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to secure a narrow 16-14 victory over Denver. Another setback took place during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, where a fair-catch interference penalty shifted momentum, contributing to a 34-27 loss.
The decision to hire Rizzi follows significant changes in the Broncos' coaching staff. Payton parted ways with former special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica shortly after a wild-card round defeat to the Buffalo Bills. Meanwhile, assistant head coach Mike Westhoff retired mid-season due to health concerns, and Chris Banjo, another special teams assistant, accepted a position with the New York Jets.
Rizzi's recent interview for the Saints head coaching position in mid-January underscores his standing in the league as a capable leader. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to solidify and enhance Denver's special teams performance as they aim for greater success in the upcoming season.
