Chelsea FC finds itself in a challenging situation as key players Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu are sidelined due to muscular injuries. Jackson is expected to be unavailable for six to eight weeks, while Guiu faces a similar absence due to a hamstring injury. As the team navigates these setbacks, head coach Enzo Maresca remains optimistic about finding solutions within the current squad.
In Chelsea's recent FA Cup defeat to Brighton, Christopher Nkunku stepped in as a striker to fill the void left by Jackson and Guiu. However, Maresca clarified Nkunku's primary role in the team.
"Christopher is an attacking midfielder. But we use him as a No 9 to find a solution with all of them. But we know very well that Christopher is not a proper No 9." – Enzo Maresca
Maresca has identified several potential candidates to occupy the No 9 position during Jackson's absence. Among these options are Pero Neto, Noni Madueke, and Tyrique George. Additionally, the possibility of employing a wide player as a false No 9 is under consideration as Chelsea adapts to the current challenges.
Despite the injuries plaguing the team, Maresca remains confident in his ability to find effective solutions.
"Maybe you need to be more direct and probably you need more linking because you don't have a threat in behind, but we will find a solution." – Enzo Maresca
The team is also on the verge of welcoming back several players from injuries. Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile are nearing full fitness, while Wesley Fofana has rejoined group training and is expected to be available in two to three weeks. In a positive development, Reece James is set to be available for selection despite missing the FA Cup clash against Brighton.
As Chelsea prepares for its upcoming fixtures, which include a Premier League match against Aston Villa on February 22 and a UEFA Conference League encounter with Dinamo Zagreb—whose exact date and time are yet to be confirmed—Maresca emphasizes the importance of player adaptability. He acknowledged the unique skill set of Jadon Sancho, suggesting that his talents could be advantageous for Chelsea moving forward.
"Christopher [Nkunku] could be one of the solutions but not the only solution," – Enzo Maresca
Maresca also reflected on the dynamics within the team, noting that some players may only perceive themselves as important when they are actively playing. He has consistently considered Christopher Nkunku an integral part of the squad since his arrival.
