In an intense ODI clash between India and England, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli showcased their prowess with the bat, while England's bowlers faced challenges on the field. The match, held on a docile pitch, saw Gill and Kohli finding boundaries with ease, putting pressure on England's bowling attack led by Mark Wood and Joe Root.
Throughout his career, Joe Root has bowled 38 overs against India across 25 ODIs without picking up a wicket. Despite being introduced into the attack as early as the 11th over, this trend continued, as Root remained wicketless. Meanwhile, Mark Wood struggled in the middle overs, averaging 109 in overs 11-40 in ODIs since the start of 2022. In the same period, Wood managed to take only three wickets in 56 overs during the middle phase of games.
Gus Atkinson managed to draw an edge from Shubman Gill, but it resulted in a thick edge that flew past the first slip and beat third man to reach the boundary. Saqib Mahmood's short delivery to Gill was countered effectively as Gill dispatched it down the ground for four. Despite this, Mark Wood opened the bowling for the 37th time in ODIs, marking his first instance since March 2021.
Gill found the mid-wicket boundary with precision, followed closely by Virat Kohli who found the cover ropes. England's team management opted for a review, introducing Joe Root into the attack earlier than usual. During one of the overs, Kohli received a brief treatment for an elbow injury but continued to play seamlessly.
Utilizing his feet on the docile pitch, Gill lofted Gus Atkinson for a six, followed by four singles and another boundary to end the over. He continued his aggressive form by pumping Atkinson back past him for another boundary. Meanwhile, Mark Wood's struggles persisted with an average of 109 in overs 11-40 since early 2022.
