Jimmy Butler made a remarkable debut with the Golden State Warriors, scoring 25 points against the Chicago Bulls. This performance marked the most points scored by a Warrior in their debut for a new team since Kevin Durant in 2016. Butler's impressive entry included hitting 7-of-12 shots and making 11-of-13 free throws, demonstrating his prowess on the court despite a challenging personal backdrop and minimal preparation time with his new team.
Butler's debut took place in Chicago, a city where he spent his initial six NBA seasons. The significance of the location was not lost on him, especially as he played on the anniversary of his father's passing. In addition, the day coincided with the birthday of one of his closest friends. Butler reflected on these poignant coincidences, stating, "This is where I began my career. My father passed a year ago today. Today's [also] the birthday of one of my very, very, very good friends."
"Life comes full circle and it works in the craziest ways." – Jimmy Butler
Despite not participating in the team's morning walkthrough due to the incomplete trade process, Butler showcased his adaptability. Head coach Steve Kerr provided him with only three plays and some new terminology before the game. Nonetheless, Butler managed to integrate seamlessly with the team, contributing to a renewed sense of confidence among the Warriors.
His passing ability also gained attention from his teammates, with Draymond Green expressing admiration for Butler's skills.
"I'm most impressed with his passing," Green commented.
Butler's return to the court marked his first game since January 21. He took just one 3-point attempt, successfully sinking it with 7:54 remaining in the third quarter. Despite his limited time on the court this season, Butler acknowledged feeling fatigued but optimistic about regaining his full stamina.
"Tired. Extremely tired," Butler admitted. "Like somebody that had a month off. Not that I wanted a month off, but I got going a little bit. I got to do a ton more of conditioning, but I'll get it back. It's only a matter of time."
His presence on the Warriors extends beyond his scoring abilities. With a newly signed two-year, $111 million deal announced before his debut, Butler's addition is expected to bolster the team's dynamics significantly. Green discussed how Butler's presence might help revive the team's previous championship confidence.
"One million percent," Green said. "I wouldn't necessarily say we have championship swagger. We have championship pedigree. The championship swagger is what we're trying to find again."
Butler's jersey, reading "Butler III," serves as an homage to his late father, further underscoring the emotional significance of his debut game. Despite the pressure and whirlwind circumstances surrounding his transition to the Warriors, Butler remained focused and encouraged by his teammates' support.
"Everybody on the roster, everybody on the coaching staff [were] continually telling me to be who I am, be myself," Butler said. "And it'll work out just fine."
The Warriors' new addition seems to have already made an impact beyond statistics. Green noted Butler's consistency in spirit and energy throughout the game.
"At no point was it ever like, ah, body language dropping." – Draymond Green
Butler himself acknowledged the importance of staying true to his game, balancing personal instincts with team expectations.
"I was trying to do what I thought was right, and then it was like, 'Oh well, everybody's telling me to be me, so go do it.'" – Draymond Green
