The Los Angeles Lakers' anticipated trade with the Charlotte Hornets for center Mark Williams has been rescinded. This decision comes after Williams failed a physical examination conducted by the Lakers. The trade, which had been agreed upon on Wednesday night and became official on Thursday, involved the Lakers sending rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2030 pick swap, and their 2031 first-round pick to the Hornets in exchange for Williams.
Williams, a 23-year-old 7-foot center, has had a challenging start to his NBA career due to persistent injury issues. These injuries have significantly impacted his availability, with Williams appearing in only 84 out of a potential 212 games during his first two and a half seasons with the Hornets. His physical with the Lakers revealed multiple issues, leading the team to fail him, according to sources.
The trade was designed to enhance the Lakers’ roster by adding a vertical spacing big man to complement Luka Doncic. Moreover, it would have opened a roster spot, allowing the Lakers to explore additional player options on the buyout market. However, Williams' injury history, including back and foot problems that have caused extended absences, ultimately led to the trade's collapse.
Before the Lakers' game against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, head coach JJ Redick noted that Williams' status remained uncertain due to the pending nature of the trade. The Lakers had listed Williams as questionable for the game but had hoped to resolve his status soon.
