The Atlanta Hawks have initiated significant roster changes following a multi-team trade involving the Cleveland Cavaliers and the LA Clippers. The transaction, finalized on Friday, saw the Hawks send forward De'Andre Hunter to the Cavaliers, who in return, received Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, future second-round picks, and pick swaps. In a strategic move, the Hawks acquired guard Bones Hyland from the Clippers, only to request waivers on him two days later.
In the trade shuffles, the Clippers secured guard Bogdan Bogdanovic and three second-round draft picks from the Hawks. The deal also involved the Hawks sending guard Terance Mann to the Clippers in exchange for Hyland. Despite Hyland's short stint in Atlanta, the decision to waive him was anticipated, as general manager Landry Fields did not include him in discussions about the team's future plans.
Hyland, a 6-foot-2 guard, played 20 games for the Clippers this season before being traded to the Hawks. During his time on court, he averaged 7.2 points, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 rebounds in 11.1 minutes per game. His overall NBA career includes 182 games across four seasons with Denver and the Clippers. The trade agreement between the Hawks and Clippers was announced late Thursday, with Hyland's move to Atlanta confirmed shortly thereafter.
The decision to request waivers on Hyland came swiftly. This move aligns with the Hawks' strategic recalibration as they aim to reshape their team dynamics. Hyland's exclusion from Fields' future discussions underscores the team's shift in focus towards other players.
