Fresh Faces and New Beginnings: Scotland’s Revamped Women’s Squad for Nations League

Interim women's boss Michael McArdle has unveiled a new-look Scotland squad ahead of this month's Nations League matches. Marking his first major selection since stepping into the role last month, McArdle has made a total of 10 changes to the group, including the introduction of six uncapped players. These fresh faces aim to bring a wave of renewed energy and competitiveness as Scotland seeks to make an impactful start in the Nations League following their failure to qualify for Euro 2025.

Among the six uncapped players are Erin Clachers, Mia McAulay, Emma Lawton, Eilidh Adams, Eilidh Shore, and Freya Gregory. Gregory holds the distinction of having played for England at the youth level, adding a layer of intrigue to her inclusion. Meanwhile, Lawton, Adams, and Shore stand out as they join the senior squad for the first time. McArdle's selection highlights his commitment to fostering young talent and providing opportunities for emerging players to showcase their skills on an international stage.

Returning to the squad are Leah Eddie and Kirsty Maclean, both of whom were part of the team in previous outings. Amy Muir from SWPL leaders Glasgow City also makes her return, further solidifying her stature within the national setup. The squad boasts representation from various clubs, including Celtic, Rangers, Hibernian, and Glasgow City, reflecting the diverse pool of talent in Scottish women's football.

The defensive lineup includes Leah Eddie from Rangers and Sophie Howard from Leicester City, alongside newcomer Emma Lawton from Celtic. In goal, Erin Clachers of Hibernian is joined by Eartha Cummings from FC Rosengard. This blend of experience and youth across different positions underscores McArdle's strategic approach to balancing seasoned players with promising newcomers.

Scotland will face Austria in their opening Nations League game on February 21, followed by a clash against the Netherlands at Hampden Park four days later. The matches present an opportunity for the team to demonstrate their capabilities and lay down a marker for future tournaments. Under McArdle's interim leadership, the team looks to build momentum and chart a course towards qualification success.

McArdle emphasizes the importance of investing in talent identification and development pathways. He notes the excitement surrounding emerging talents and acknowledges the efforts made in recognizing potential beyond domestic borders.

"It's exciting with the pathway and the talent that's coming through the pathway just now, but also exciting that our talent ID over the last couple of years is being invested in, and we've worked really hard identifying talent that's not just here domestically." – Michael McArdle

Age is not a barrier for McArdle as he prioritizes form, competition, and potential when selecting players.

"Age is irrelevant. It's form, competition, potential and who's right at the right time to make sure that we can consistently be the best." – Michael McArdle

This philosophy aligns with his broader vision for the team and its future.

"The exciting thing is I don't just feel it. I've been living it for the last two years." – Michael McArdle

He highlights the importance of rewarding players' efforts and acknowledges the challenging yet positive process of squad selection.

"It was a good opportunity just now to reward players for their efforts, they've earned the right to be considered." – Michael McArdle

"And also it's been really difficult selecting the squad, which is a real positive for us all." – Michael McArdle

McArdle remains optimistic about the depth and talent within the squad.

"There's depth, a talent there, so really just an opportunity to be fresh, try something and take us in the direction that we need to qualify for tournaments. So this is the start of it." – Michael McArdle
