Australia asserted dominance on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. By the end of the day, Sri Lanka found themselves precariously placed at 229-9, with Australia needing just one more wicket to close out the innings. The visitors' performance was a continuation of their form, having won the first match of the series by a record innings and 242 runs.
Cooper Connolly marked his Test debut for Australia, delivering a modest 0-12 in three overs. However, it was Nathan Lyon who made a significant impact with the ball. Lyon claimed the first three wickets of the innings, including that of Sri Lanka's captain, Dimuth Karunaratne. This match holds special significance for Karunaratne as he plays his 100th and final Test.
Kusal Mendis remained a beacon of hope for Sri Lanka. He was unbeaten on 59 at the day's close, having formed a crucial partnership with Ramesh Mendis. The pair added 65 runs for the seventh wicket before Mitchell Starc intervened, dismissing Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya in quick succession.
Matthew Kuhnemann also played a pivotal role in breaking Sri Lanka's resistance. He bowled Nishan Peiris and then expertly stumped Dinesh Chandimal, who had contributed a resilient 74 runs from 163 deliveries. Chandimal's dismissal left Sri Lanka struggling at 150-6, further tilting the advantage in Australia's favor.
The second Test is being contested as a five-day game at the picturesque Galle International Stadium. With Australia firmly in command, Sri Lanka will aim to regroup and extend their innings as much as possible when play resumes.
