Sean McVay is pushing for more versatility in the Los Angeles Rams' offense in 2025, a year marked by strategic decisions and potential retooling. As the team evaluates its roster, Cooper Kupp stands at the center of discussions, with his future possibly influencing the Rams' broader offseason plans. In 2024, the Rams heavily relied on 11 personnel, using it 81.3% of the time. This dependency highlights the need for a more diverse offensive approach moving forward.
Cooper Kupp has been a transformative figure for McVay, both professionally and personally.
"Cooper has changed my life for the better." – Sean McVay
His impact extends beyond the field, as McVay acknowledges Kupp's influence on his personal development and leadership style.
"He's made an impact on me, most importantly, as a person. What he's done as a player is incredibly amazing in regard to the production but also he's been so important in terms of a lot of the things that we've been able to build with what he represents as a captain." – Sean McVay
Despite his contributions, trading Kupp remains a possibility as the Rams seek to retool their receivers' room. The trade cannot be finalized until the new league year begins on March 12. If executed before June 1, a trade would save the team $12.5 million, although his cap hit stands at nearly $29.8 million.
Los Angeles holds more than $38 million in cap space for 2025, providing flexibility in free agency to enhance roster versatility. Demarcus Robinson will become a free agent at the start of the league year, offering an opportunity for changes within the receiving corps. Additionally, Tyler Higbee enters the final year of his contract with a base salary of $4.5 million, though only $2 million is guaranteed.
The Rams could consider re-signing Kupp, which would ensure depth and continuity with a player already familiar with McVay's system. However, should they proceed with a trade, they must address their receiver lineup. Currently, four receivers are under contract for 2025: Kupp, Nacua, Whittington, and Smith.
Nacua has shown promise early in his career, averaging 88.4 receiving yards per game over his first two seasons. His performance indicates potential for increased responsibility should Kupp depart. Meanwhile, quarterback Matthew Stafford remains undecided about his future but believes he still has much to offer on the field.
