Trey Hendrickson’s Contract Future with the Bengals: Extension or Trade Looms

Trey Hendrickson's contract future with the Cincinnati Bengals remains uncertain as discussions about his potential extension or trade surface. Hendrickson, a standout defensive end, has been a pivotal player for the Bengals over the past four seasons. He has made four Pro Bowl appearances during his tenure with the team and led the league with an impressive 17.5 sacks in the 2024 season. Despite his significant contributions, Hendrickson finds himself navigating complex contract negotiations.

In a recent interview on "The Pat McAfee Show," Hendrickson expressed his desire to remain with the Bengals. He stated that ideally, he and his wife would love to continue their journey in Cincinnati. However, Hendrickson also revealed a preference for more direct communication from the Bengals' front office regarding his contract status, rather than learning about potential developments through social media.

"If it's something we can agree on in terms, that would be great. Ideally, my wife and I would love to stay in Cincinnati," – Trey Hendrickson

Hendrickson's current contract, which he signed in 2021, extends through the next season, making him one of the most productive players in the league over recent years. Despite receiving a one-year extension in 2023, he requested a trade at the start of last offseason. This request stems from a desire for a new contract, a sentiment that dates back to his failed trade request.

Duke Tobin, a representative of the Bengals' management, acknowledged Hendrickson's importance to the team while highlighting financial constraints.

"Yes, he's an important part that played well for us, right? We can't have guys at the top of the payroll in every position, right? We'll do what we can. We'll do what we feel is right, and we will try to get Trey re-signed." – Duke Tobin

Hendrickson ranks 11th in average annual salary among edge rushers according to the Roster Management System. Despite this ranking, he has demonstrated exceptional performance, leading the NFL in sacks and earning an Associated Press All-Pro selection.

The defensive end remains committed to contributing to the Bengals' success, emphasizing his intent to avoid becoming a distraction during critical periods such as OTAs or training camp.

"During the season, when you're talking about OTAs or camp, you don't want to become a distraction for the team," – Trey Hendrickson
