LeBron James, the face of the Los Angeles Lakers, revealed his thoughts on the recent blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic to the team. The trade saw the Lakers part with Anthony Davis, Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a future first-round pick in exchange for Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris. James expressed mixed emotions, initially thinking the trade was a "hoax" before realizing its authenticity. However, he remains committed to the Lakers and optimistic about the team's future with Doncic.
James first learned of the trade while dining with his family after a victorious game against the New York Knicks. The news came as a surprise, leaving him with disbelief.
"We had just come off a big win. A huge win in the Garden. I was out. I mean, you guys have seen the report. I was out with my family at dinner and got the news and the first time I heard it, I thought it was for sure fake. I thought it was a hoax, people messing around or whatever." – LeBron James
After processing the news, James had a video call with Anthony Davis. He described the conversation as a "weird, uncomfortable, truth moment," acknowledging the difficulty of saying goodbye to a teammate with whom he shared a championship victory in 2019-20.
"It was definitely a weird, uncomfortable, truth moment for us. Just knowing that he was going to be gone, that was very, very difficult. Very challenging. I can see how in shock he was, obviously. And he probably saw it from my face as well." – LeBron James
Despite the emotional upheaval, James remains devoted to the Lakers organization. He emphasized that he would have considered waiving his no-trade clause if he had any concerns about the trade.
"If I had concerns about it, I'd waive my no-trade clause and get up out of here," – LeBron James
James's commitment to his team is unwavering.
"I'm here right now. I'm here right now. I'm committed to the Lakers organization." – LeBron James
James looks forward to working alongside Doncic, his favorite NBA player for some time now. He anticipates that Lakers coach JJ Redick will effectively manage their playing time to ensure a smooth transition.
"Luka's been my favorite player in the NBA for a while now," – LeBron James
He expressed confidence in his ability to integrate new players into the team seamlessly.
"As the leader of the team, as one of the captains of the team, it's my job to make it as seamless as possible [for the new acquisitions]." – LeBron James
Tyronn Lue, an observer of the situation, also expressed confidence in Redick's ability to handle the team's dynamics.
"[Lakers coach] JJ [Redick] will do a good job of staggering those guys, kind of like we did with Kyrie [Irving] and LeBron for three quarters and then close games together…. It's not a tough problem to have." – Tyronn Lue
James is optimistic about playing alongside Doncic and believes their collaboration will elevate the team's performance.
"I don't see it's going to be a problem at all," – Tyronn Lue
Doncic is set to make his debut with the Lakers on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers. Both James and Doncic are expected to play pivotal roles in strengthening the team's competitive edge.
