Chip Kelly is set to make a significant return to the NFL as he takes on the role of offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Pete Carroll. This move comes after Kelly's seven-year tenure in college football, including a successful stint last season as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for national champion Ohio State. Kelly's history in college football is marked by remarkable achievements, particularly during his tenure at Oregon. Known for utilizing a devastating tempo that redefined offensive strategies, Kelly led the Ducks to a 46-7 record over four seasons. His time at Oregon included an appearance in the national title game, two Rose Bowl appearances, and a Fiesta Bowl victory. This formidable track record underscores his capability as a gifted playcaller and offensive innovator.
After his successes at Oregon, Kelly transitioned to the NFL, where he served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2015. During his time with the Eagles, he amassed a 26-21 record and secured one playoff appearance. However, Kelly's tenure in the NFL also saw challenges, particularly during his final season with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, where the team struggled with a 2-14 record.
Kelly's recent role at UCLA spanned six seasons, during which he navigated a complex landscape, ultimately achieving a 35-34 record with the Bruins. His decision to leave UCLA for Ohio State last year was driven by a desire to focus more on football, free from the myriad off-field responsibilities that accompany a college head coach position.
Ohio State played a crucial role in Kelly's career trajectory. His arrival at Ohio State came at a critical time for the Buckeyes, especially given his close friendship with head coach Ryan Day, who played for Kelly in college at New Hampshire. During his time at Ohio State, Kelly became the third key assistant to leave the Buckeyes this offseason.
Kelly's strategic return to the NFL with the Raiders aligns with Pete Carroll's vision of assembling a team of dedicated football enthusiasts. Carroll emphasized the importance of having individuals who not only understand the game but can also contribute to growth and maintain balance within the team.
