In a significant shake-up in the NBA landscape, the Sacramento Kings have traded their star guard De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. The trade, finalized this week, also sees the Spurs acquiring Jordan McLaughlin and a 2027 first-round pick from the Kings. Meanwhile, the Kings receive Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, and a slew of draft picks from the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. The Chicago Bulls, in turn, bolster their roster by acquiring Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and a 2025 first-round pick.
The trade reflects strategic moves by all three teams to reshape their rosters and future draft prospects. The San Antonio Spurs retain both unprotected picks from the Atlanta Hawks, which include a promising 2027 first-round pick, especially as the Hawks are currently on an eight-game losing streak. The Spurs have strategically positioned themselves with swap rights to several future picks from teams such as Boston, Dallas, Minnesota, and Sacramento.
Sacramento's decision to trade Fox comes amid his declining usage rate in the team’s offense this season, dipping to 23%. Additionally, Fox has struggled with his shooting, hitting just 44% of his 2-point attempts. The Kings have also been among the league's lowest in 3-point attempt rates, a statistic underscored by the performance of the DeRozan-Fox-Sabonis trio.
The Kings aim to revitalize their lineup with the addition of Zach LaVine and a collection of future draft assets. Malik Monk's recent impressive average of 8.7 assists per game could play a key role in the team's new dynamics. Meanwhile, Kevin Huerter, known for his career 37.5% 3-point shooting accuracy, will be looking to rebound from a down season in 2024-25 as he joins the Bulls.
For the Chicago Bulls, acquiring players like Zach Collins and Tre Jones adds depth to their squad as they look to compete more effectively in the coming seasons. Jalen Johnson's season-ending shoulder surgery has left a gap in the Hawks' lineup that they must address moving forward.
