England's hopes of clinching the ICC Women's Under-19 World Cup came to a disappointing end as they suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat against India in the semi-final held in Kuala Lumpur. India’s remarkable performance will see them face South Africa in the final, following their victory over Australia by five wickets.
In the semi-final match, England opted to bat first, aiming to set a competitive total. The team initially appeared to be in a strong position at 81 for 2, bolstered by opener Davina Perrin's solid contribution of 45 runs and captain Abi Norgrove’s 30 runs. However, a dramatic collapse ensued, resulting in the loss of six wickets for just 11 runs. England's innings crumbled, leading to a meager total of 113 for 8 from their allotted 20 overs.
India seized the opportunity with both hands. They reached the target in impressive fashion, completing it in under 15 overs. Garima Kamalini led the charge for India, scoring an unbeaten 56 runs off 50 balls, showcasing her talent and composure under pressure. Gongadi Trisha also made a valuable contribution with 35 runs before being dismissed, marking a decisive performance for the Indian side.
Phoebe Brett stood out for England, taking the only wicket by dismissing Gongadi Trisha, but her efforts were insufficient to halt India’s momentum. The left-arm spinners from India, Parunika Sisodia and Vaishnavi Sharma, proved instrumental in dismantling England’s batting lineup, each claiming three wickets and effectively neutralizing any potential threats.
The semi-final result highlights India's prowess in youth cricket as they advance to the final. With their performance against England, they have established themselves as formidable contenders. The anticipation builds for the final showdown against South Africa, who also demonstrated their capabilities by defeating Australia.
