The England Lions faced a formidable challenge in their final four-day match of the Australian tour, battling against Australia A in Sydney. The home team declared at 373 for 9, leaving the Lions in a difficult position as they closed the day at 116 for 2, trailing by 141 runs.
Australia A's strong performance was spearheaded by Kurtis Patterson, who scored an impressive 137 runs, and Josh Phillipe, who remained unbeaten at 120. Their partnership laid a solid foundation for a substantial first-innings total that put pressure on the England Lions from the outset. In response, the Lions struggled, with Matty Hurst managing to score only 33 runs, while Rocky Flintoff matched him with another 33.
Sonny Baker made a notable debut for Somerset, claiming three wickets for 60 runs. His performance provided a glimmer of hope for the Lions, but they ultimately succumbed to Australia A's bowling attack. Will Sutherland and Brendan Doggett wreaked havoc, taking three wickets each for just 7 and 17 runs, respectively.
In the second innings, the England Lions were bowled out for just 116 runs, which forced them into follow-on territory. However, they showed resilience during their second batting effort. Openers Alex Davies and Ben McKinney forged a crucial partnership of 106 runs, with McKinney scoring 67 not out. Durham's McKinney also contributed 26 runs in the first innings, showcasing his potential in both outings.
Jordan Buckingham's late wickets provided some consolation for the Lions, as he claimed two wickets before stumps. Sam Cook also made his mark with three wickets for 58 runs for Essex. Despite these efforts, the prospect of chasing down Australia A's imposing total remains daunting.
