Tottenham Hotspur has initiated talks with Bayern Munich over the potential signing of Mathys Tel, a promising 19-year-old French U21 international. The discussions revolve around a £50 million permanent deal, placing Tel at the heart of a major Premier League transfer battle. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United are also expressing interest in the young forward, highlighting his growing reputation across Europe.
Tel joined Bayern Munich in 2022 from Rennes, with the German club investing approximately £23 million in his talents. Since his arrival, he has made 83 appearances and netted 16 goals across all competitions. Known for his speed, aerial prowess, and clinical finishing, Tel has primarily occupied the left side of the pitch, where he can cut in on his favored right foot. Despite his potential, he has found himself on the periphery this season, accumulating only 344 minutes in the Bundesliga and Champions League without finding the back of the net.
The young forward's desire for more game time has fueled speculation about his future. Bayern Munich's sporting director, Max Eberl, acknowledged Tel's wish to leave the club in pursuit of regular minutes.
"He has said he would like to leave," – Max Eberl.
Interest from Premier League clubs comes as no surprise given Tel's impressive performance last season. He contributed nine goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns, demonstrating his potential to play at the highest level. His versatility allows him to operate not only on the left but also on the right and as a center-forward, drawing comparisons to former Spurs striker Harry Kane.
Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, has praised Tel’s abilities while remaining discreet about any potential deal following their recent Europa League victory against Elfsborg.
As Tel considers his options, his character and rapid adaptation off the field have not gone unnoticed. Florian Plettenberg, a noted sports journalist, highlighted Tel's quick learning abilities.
"He is a great character. He is 19 years old but he has learned to speak German very fast and very well." – Florian Plettenberg.
Furthermore, Harry Kane has recognized Tel's potential, praising his work ethic and finishing skills.
"He is a great guy. He wants to work, good trainer, good finisher, lot of potential." – Harry Kane.
Despite his limited playing time this season, Tel remains a highly regarded talent with a reported transfer value of £50 million—a significant sum for a player of his age in today’s transfer market. His ability to perform across different positions adds to his allure for clubs seeking versatile attacking options.
