With a previous tenure as the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, Anarumo faces the challenge of transforming the Colts' defensive playbook. After six seasons with the Bengals, his dismissal has led him to embrace a novel approach with the Colts, moving away from a static defense under Gus Bradley to a more dynamic and varied system. Anarumo's philosophy centers around flexibility and surprise, ensuring that opposing quarterbacks remain uncertain about defensive maneuvers.
Anarumo's track record at Cincinnati underscores his belief in mixing up defensive strategies. The Bengals frequently adjusted their coverage schemes, resulting in a more unpredictable defense. However, despite these efforts, the Bengals concluded their season ranking 25th in both points allowed and yards allowed per game. Anarumo acknowledges the need for improvement as he transitions to the Colts. His experience with quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes adds a layer of expertise that he aims to leverage in Indianapolis.
In a significant shift from the Colts' previous defensive style, Anarumo emphasizes targeting opponents' key playmakers through specific game plans. He illustrated this approach by referencing the Baltimore Ravens' multifaceted gameplay, highlighting the importance of adaptability. This approach marks a departure from the zone-heavy schemes favored by Colts General Manager Chris Ballard. Under Bradley, the Colts relied on zone coverages for 67.9% of opposing quarterback dropbacks in 2024, ranking them third in the league for zone usage. In contrast, Anarumo's Bengals employed zone coverages on 56.7% of dropbacks and man coverages on 43.3%.
