McCarthy Steps Back as Kellen Moore Eyes Saints Coaching Role

Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, has decided not to pursue any coaching opportunities this year. His contract with the Cowboys expired after the season, leading both parties to mutually agree on parting ways. Meanwhile, attention has turned to Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who has emerged as a leading candidate for the New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancy.

Moore's candidacy gained momentum following his second interview with the Saints on Monday. His impressive performance with the Eagles, particularly during their NFC Championship Game where his offense scored 55 points against the Commanders, has made him a top contender. The Saints are actively exploring options, having conducted second interviews with other notable candidates such as Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

McCarthy's decision to take a hiatus from coaching is reminiscent of his previous break after being released by the Green Bay Packers in late 2018. During that time, he considered positions with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants but ultimately chose to sit out the 2019 season. McCarthy was later hired by the Cowboys in 2020 with a directive to secure postseason success, achieving a 49-35 record over five seasons.

The Saints' coaching search intensified following the in-season dismissal of Dennis Allen. Special teams coach Darren Rizzi stepped in on an interim basis. Alongside Moore, several candidates have been considered, including Aaron Glenn, who interviewed virtually before joining the New York Jets, and Kliff Kingsbury, who opted out of pursuing the Saints' position. Joe Brady of the Buffalo Bills also decided to remain with his current team instead of attending a second interview in New Orleans.

Despite McCarthy being initially scheduled to interview for the Saints' position this week, he has chosen to concentrate on future opportunities and focus on the 2026 hiring cycle. This decision leaves Moore as a prominent figure in the Saints' search for a new head coach.
