The January transfer window has sprung into action, and Manchester United are making significant moves to strengthen their squad. Talks with Napoli regarding Alejandro Garnacho are set to resume, as the left-back waits for approval to travel to the UK. Once he receives the green light, Garnacho will undergo a medical examination and complete his transfer, marking Ruben Amorim's first signing as United manager. Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu, a 20-year-old left wing-back from Lecce, has emerged as Manchester United's priority transfer target.
Manchester United are closing in on signing Dorgu, with final details of the paperwork being addressed. The transfer deal is estimated to be worth £30 million, comprising £25.2 million upfront and an additional £4.2 million in performance-related add-ons. Dorgu's impressive track record includes 53 appearances in Serie A since joining Lecce from Danish club Nordsjaelland in 2022. Additionally, he has been capped four times by Denmark, highlighting his rising profile on the international stage.
The interest in Dorgu dates back to when Manchester United's technical director, Alexander Riget, identified him as a promising talent at the age of 12. Riget, along with current Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, took a five-hour drive to Jutland to witness Dorgu's potential firsthand.
"It is a five-hour drive from here." – Alexander Riget
"He was always a good player but he developed very well a little later, at the age of 16 or 17." – Alexander Riget
Dorgu was considered a potential signing by Lecce even before he broke through at FC Nordsjaelland. His desire to join Manchester United has been a decisive factor in moving negotiations forward, making the club optimistic about reaching an agreement before the transfer window closes.
"No, we were still a very important part of his journey. We are very happy about his situation at the moment." – Alexander Riget
Both Manchester United and Lecce remained committed to revisiting discussions at the start of the week to reach a consensus. With Dorgu's eagerness to move to Old Trafford clear, all parties are hopeful that an agreement will be finalized soon.
In parallel, Manchester United have strategically positioned themselves regarding Alejandro Garnacho's potential sale to Napoli. While they are willing to entertain offers for Garnacho, they remain firm that only a substantial offer will prompt them to part with the player.
