Michael Wilson, a standout wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, and Sophia Smith, a celebrated forward for the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) and Portland Thorns FC, tied the knot this past Saturday. The couple, who met as freshmen at Stanford University six years ago, shared the joyous news on Instagram, revealing stunning wedding photos set against a picturesque desert backdrop. Wilson and Smith walked hand-in-hand down a sandy path, marking the beginning of their new chapter together.
Wilson meticulously planned the proposal, which took place at the Peninsula Park Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. Describing the momentous occasion, Wilson exclaimed, "Honestly, if I could like put a measurement on it, it was like a 12 out of 10." He further reflected on the significance of the day, stating, "It honestly was one of the best days of my life, truthfully."
The wedding's original date remained unchanged as Arizona did not qualify for the playoffs, allowing Wilson to adhere to his plans. He had previously mentioned that the date would be flexible due to its proximity to Super Bowl LIX. The ceremony was intimate, with Wilson telling a Cardinals' team reporter in November that only about 30 guests would attend.
Wilson's football career has been notable, with 47 receptions for 548 yards and four touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, Smith's achievements are equally impressive. She started in six games for the USWNT during the 2024 Paris Games and contributed significantly to their gold-medal victory with three goals and two assists.
Smith continues to shine in her role with the Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Her athletic prowess complements Wilson’s accomplishments on the field, making them a power couple in the sports world.
