Harris English clinched the Farmers Insurance Open title, securing his first PGA Tour victory since 2021. With a final score of 8-under 280, English outperformed his competitors by one shot, marking his fifth career PGA Tour win. The tournament at Torrey Pines posed a challenge with difficult weather conditions, yet English remained resilient, completing the final round with a 1-over 73. This victory is particularly significant for English, who has been striving to return to the winner's circle since his last triumph in an eight-hole playoff against Kramer Hickok at the Travelers Championships in 2021.
English's journey to this victory was not without obstacles. He underwent hip surgery in early 2022, which sidelined him for five months. Despite not winning in the interim, English consistently demonstrated his prowess on the course, earning nine top-10 finishes over the past two seasons. Now, he looks ahead to defending his title at the Genesis Invitational in San Diego in three weeks, an event that has been relocated from Riviera to Torrey Pines.
The tournament witnessed turbulent weather conditions that affected many players' performances. An 86-minute delay occurred during the second round on Thursday due to strong winds, which returned intermittently on Saturday, particularly impacting the oceanside holes. The adverse weather led many fans to don winter jackets, a rare sight in typically mild San Diego. Lanto Griffin, one of the competitors, embraced the cold by sporting a wooly white beanie with a pompom.
English has a notable history at Torrey Pines, having narrowly missed victory in a four-way playoff to Jason Day in 2015 and finishing third at the U.S. Open in 2021. Reflecting on his connection with the course, he expressed,
"I love how this course sets up for me," – Harris English
Sam Stevens emerged as a formidable contender during the final round, starting six shots behind but finishing strong with a 4-under 68—the best final round of this tournament edition. Stevens turned professional in 2018 and joined the PGA Tour in 2023, showing promising potential for future competitions.
Ludvig Åberg, who led after each of the first two rounds, struggled with illness in his last two rounds and concluded the tournament at 3 over. Meanwhile, Sungjae Im and Kris Ventura shared fourth place at 5-under. Andrew Novak finished third at 6 under after a challenging final round of 74, which saw him momentarily lead before missing out on what would have been his first tour victory.
