Alejandro del Rey clinched his first European tour title with a commanding victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship. The 26-year-old Spaniard triumphed after 70 starts on the tour, finishing the tournament at an impressive 22-under par. Del Rey's stellar performance at the Al Hamra Golf Club saw him start the final round with a two-shot lead, which he impressively extended to five shots with consecutive birdies on holes 1, 2, and 5.
Del Rey remained bogey-free over the weekend, showcasing his refined skills and mental fortitude. He maintained his lead with precision and poise, parring his way home to secure the win comfortably. His nearest competitor, Marcus Armitage of England, completed the week at 18 under par, while fellow Spaniard David Puig finished third at 15 under.
The victory arrived after Del Rey delivered a consistent performance, shooting a third straight 6-under 66. Reflecting on his journey, Del Rey expressed immense gratitude and relief at finally achieving a European tour triumph.
"I'm just grateful and I'm very happy that this finally came," Del Rey remarked after his win.
His path to victory was not without challenges. Since tying for seventh place at the Singapore Classic in March, Del Rey dedicated himself to improving his game. He acknowledged the period of struggle and self-reflection that led to his breakthrough.
"I got to a point last year where I just felt like I wasn't having that much fun on the golf course because for me, playing for 20th, 30th place wasn't that meaningful at that point," he confessed.
