Bo Nix: The Rookie QB Who Revitalized the Denver Broncos

Bo Nix
, the sixth quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, has quickly become a pivotal figure for the Denver Broncos. Under the guidance of head coach Sean Payton, who made Nix the first rookie starting quarterback of his 17-season coaching career, Nix helped bring an end to the Broncos’ eight-year playoff drought. His performance throughout the season not only set new records but also sparked optimism for the team’s future.

Nix's ability to handle pressure was evident, as he was sacked only 24 times during the 2024 season. This marks a significant improvement compared to the 52 combined sacks taken by his predecessors, Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham, in the previous season. His knack for finding the end zone was equally impressive; after Week 10, Nix threw 21 touchdown passes, tying him with Joe Burrow of the Bengals for third most in the NFL. This contributed to a franchise rookie record of 29 passing touchdowns, a feat second only to Justin Herbert's 31 for the Chargers in 2020.

The rookie quarterback also showcased his versatility as he finished third on the team in rushing with 430 yards and tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with four. However, despite having one of the league's best pass-blocking offensive lines, Nix's QBR was 56.0 when blitzed, placing him 26th in the league. His in-pocket QBR stood at 53.9, ranking 23rd overall.

In moments of reflection and preparation, Nix was back in the Broncos' facility soon after the players had their medical exams and were formally sent into the offseason. His dedication to improvement and readiness to adapt shone through his ability to distribute the ball effectively. Ten different players caught touchdown passes from him during the season, showcasing his skill in spreading the ball around.

Initially, Nix's completion percentage after his first nine games was 62.6%, placing him 27th in the NFL. However, he showed marked improvement in his QBR, rising from 52.0 in Weeks 1-9 to 62.0 in Weeks 10-18. Notably, Nix achieved two standout performances with 300-yard, four-touchdown games—once against Atlanta in Week 11 and again against the Chiefs during the season finale that clinched their playoff berth.

"Whether it's been a tough week or a good week, he's on to the next game and getting ready to go," said Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Nix's resilience and focus have earned him respect and admiration from teammates and coaches alike.

"Get the ball to the right spots to the right people," Nix emphasized, highlighting his strategic approach to gameplay.

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton praised Nix’s capabilities:

"His resume speaks for itself."

Garett Bolles, the Broncos left tackle, echoed similar sentiments:

"Bo is a relentless quarterback, you could see that."

Quinn Meinerz, a guard for the Broncos, expressed his admiration for Nix's consistent development:

"I've said it over and over again, [I've] been impressed every single week… He continued to show improvement, and I think that's the only thing you can really ask for from a young player."

Nix himself remains focused on his goals for the team:

"I wanted to help a team make a playoff and push for a Super Bowl. [We're] working hard to become one of those great teams."
