The UEFA Champions League is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of a new 36-team format. This revamped structure, which features a single league, promises to change the dynamics of Europe's most prestigious club competition. Under this format, the top eight teams will automatically secure places in the last 16, while teams finishing 25th to 36th will face elimination. Notably, no team will have the opportunity to drop into the Europa League, adding to the stakes of each match.
The knockout playoffs are scheduled for February 11/12 and February 18/19, with seeded teams (9th-16th) enjoying the advantage of playing the second leg at home. Teams seeded from 1st to 8th must wait until Friday, February 21, to discover their opponents. The intricate seeding system ensures that every team has a unique path depending on their league standings at the end of the group stage.
For instance, if a team finishes first or second in the league, they will bypass the knockout playoffs and face one of the winners from the matches involving the 17th/18th and 15th/16th seeds in the round of 16. Conversely, teams placed 15th or 16th will compete against either the 17th or 18th seed in the knockout playoffs, subsequently facing the first or second seed in the round of 16. Similarly, teams finishing in positions 21st or 22nd will meet either the 11th or 12th seed in the knockout playoffs before taking on the fifth or sixth seed in the round of 16.
Teams that conclude their league campaign in seventh or eighth positions will escape the knockout playoffs and play one of the winners from matches between the 9th/10th and 23rd/24th seeds in the round of 16. These measures ensure that every position within the league significantly impacts a team's journey through the competition.
The first draw for the knockout playoff pairings is set for Friday, January 31, at 11 a.m., which will determine each team's potential opponents. These playoffs will then unfold over two legs on February 11/12 and February 18/19. Following these intense rounds, the Round of 16 is scheduled for March 4/5 and March 11/12. The culmination of this thrilling new format will take place on May 31, 2025, when the final is held.
This revamped format aims to enhance competition by ensuring that every match holds substantial significance. The removal of Europa League relegation means that all teams must bring their utmost performance throughout each stage.
