Ben Johnson Takes the Helm: A New Era for Chicago Bears’ Offense

Ben Johnson has been introduced as the 19th head coach in the storied 105-year history of the Chicago Bears. Formerly the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2022 to 2024, Johnson's appointment signals a new strategic direction for the Bears. Known for his innovative playcalling, Johnson led the Lions to the NFC's No. 1 seed in 2024, solidifying his reputation as a forward-thinking strategist in the NFL.

In his new role, Johnson faces the challenge of revitalizing the Bears' offense around quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams endured a difficult season in 2024, sacked a league-high 68 times due to inadequate pass protection. Johnson, aware of these challenges, has initiated discussions on strengthening the Chicago Bears' offensive line. He is determined to unlock what he describes as a "sleeping giant," a perception he held during his tenure with the Lions.

Johnson brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision to Chicago. Under his guidance, quarterback Jared Goff achieved three consecutive 4,000-yard seasons and maintained a Total QBR of 64 over 51 regular-season starts. Johnson now plans to craft an offense tailored specifically to Williams' strengths and potential.

"Having a quarterback helps," Johnson remarked, emphasizing his focus on building around Williams.

Caleb Williams expressed excitement at working with Johnson, who intends to design an offense that aligns with Williams' abilities.

"He told me that it'll be my offense," Williams stated.

"He's going to build around me, but also, he's going to test me. He's going to challenge me in the offseason and things like that to what's worked and what works in the NFL and things he may want me to get better at, but at the end of the day, if that doesn't fit me, if it doesn't work with me, it won't be there — and our personnel overall," he elaborated.

Johnson clarified that the offensive system he will implement in Chicago will not simply replicate what he orchestrated in Detroit.

"Nope, we're ripping this thing down to the studs, and we're going to build it out with him first and foremost, and then with the pieces around him next," Johnson declared.

He acknowledges that Williams played a significant role in his decision to join the Bears.

"There's no doubt Caleb played a large component into my decision. He is a phenomenal talent that had — as many quarterbacks do — an up-and-down rookie year. Where I see my role is as a supporter of him. This offense will be calibrated with him in mind. We're going to build this thing," Johnson explained.

Johnson also noted that while quarterback performance is crucial, success requires more than just individual talent.

"Everyone wants to talk about the quarterback and Caleb, I'm excited to work with you, but it's gonna take more than just you. And there are a lot of pieces already in place," Johnson said.

Williams appreciates Johnson's approach and understanding of his unique abilities.

"Not every player is Jared Goff, but you're yourself. That goes into that. Being able to have a coach that understands that and wants to build around me and then the other personnel that we have on this team, the wide receivers, special wide receivers that we have. Special running backs. All these different aspects of a team and an offense I think works in our favor and works in his favor. It's great that he knows that and understands that because that brings another level of excitement, because now it's ours," Williams expressed.
