Ben Johnson has taken the helm as the new head coach of the Chicago Bears, marking a significant shift in leadership for the storied NFL franchise. Johnson, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, will become the 19th head coach in the Bears' 105-year history. His appointment follows a notable tenure with the Lions and comes on the heels of their playoff loss to the Washington Commanders.
Johnson's availability for the Bears' position came after his successful season with the Lions, who finished with a remarkable 15-2 record. Under his leadership as offensive coordinator, Detroit boasted the highest points scored in the NFL this past season. The Lions' offense averaged an impressive 28.2 points per game from 2022 to 2024, showcasing Johnson's ability to craft and execute high-performance strategies.
The Chicago Bears are hoping that Johnson can bring similar offensive prowess to their team. He will be tasked with elevating quarterback Caleb Williams, aiming to maximize his potential and enhance the Bears' overall offensive capabilities. This challenge is compounded by the fact that the Bears currently hold the No. 10 pick in the 2024 draft, offering opportunities for strategic acquisitions.
Despite the Lions' success, Johnson's transition to the Bears signifies a fresh start. The Bears ranked 19th in pre-snap motion usage last season, significantly behind the Lions, who ranked 5th. Johnson's experience and expertise in orchestrating top-10 offenses over the past two seasons will be crucial in addressing these disparities.
In addition to developing the team's offensive strategy, Johnson focuses on assembling a competent staff. Former New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen emerges as a leading candidate for Chicago's defensive coordinator position. The recruitment process reflects the Bears' commitment to building a diverse and capable coaching team.
"We're going to cast a wide net," said Ryan Poles, emphasizing the team's dedication to exploring various backgrounds across offense, defense, special teams, college, and professional leagues.
"It's going to be a diverse group. This will be different backgrounds from offense, defense, special teams, college, pro. We're turning every stone to make sure we're doing this the right way… There's going to be some names that you don't expect that are going to surprise you because we're digging deeper than we ever have before," added Poles.
The Bears conducted a virtual interview with Johnson on January 11 during the Lions' first-round bye. This interview was part of a comprehensive search that included 16 other candidates. Ultimately, Johnson's proven track record and innovative approach secured him the position.
