Ludvig Åberg emerged as the early leader at the Farmers Insurance Open, marking a stunning start with a 9-under 63 on the opening day. The tournament, which features fewer stars than usual, saw Åberg take a commanding two-shot lead over Danny Walker and Hayden Springer at Torrey Pines. The event began on Wednesday, setting itself apart by concluding on Saturday to avoid clashing with the NFL's conference championship games.
Playing on the more forgiving North Course, Åberg demonstrated exceptional skill by hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation. His round included an impressive eight birdies and an eagle. Reflecting on his performance, Åberg expressed enthusiasm for the course setup.
"I like when you hit a lot of drivers, and I feel like I did that a lot today, and probably going to do the same tomorrow," – Ludvig Åberg
In addition to his outstanding play, Åberg is building on a strong start to the season, having secured a fifth-place finish in Maui after recovering from knee surgery last fall. He also impressed last year with a ninth-place finish in his Torrey Pines debut.
"I haven't had any issues since the surgery, so it's really nice," – Ludvig Åberg
Danny Walker, a rookie who earned his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour, delivered a bogey-free round to secure a tie for second place. Walker's performance was particularly noteworthy as he had missed his first two cuts of the season. Meanwhile, Hayden Springer joined Walker just one shot behind the leader, adding tension to the competition.
Close on their heels are Lanto Griffin, Zac Blair, Zach Johnson, and Aldrich Potgieter, all tied for fourth place and trailing Walker and Springer by one stroke. Notably absent from the event are stars Collin Morikawa and Will Zalatoris, who withdrew earlier in the week. Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, the highest-ranked player present, shot a solid 68 on the South Course.
