Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a new comedy series titled “Running Point,” starring Kate Hudson. The announcement came on Tuesday, and the show is set to premiere on February 27. This 10-episode series promises to deliver humor intertwined with a storyline that mirrors significant moments from Jeanie Buss’ tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Kate Hudson takes on the leading role, portraying a character who steps into the shoes of her brother as president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves. This plotline draws parallels to real-life events from 2017 when Jeanie Buss, president and controlling owner of the Lakers, made pivotal changes in the franchise's management. During that period, Buss dismissed her brother Jim Buss, then executive vice president of basketball operations, and general manager Mitch Kupchak, appointing Lakers legend Magic Johnson as president of basketball operations.
The series also features a character named Marcus Winfield, reminiscent of Lakers forward LeBron James. Described as "a once-in-a-generation talent with two championship rings, two Olympic gold medals, and 12 All-Star Game visits," Winfield mirrors James' illustrious career in the NBA.
Jeanie Buss herself has contributed creatively to "Running Point," serving as an executive producer for one episode. She is joined by Linda Rambis, manager of special projects for the Lakers, who also holds an executive producer credit for an episode. The storyline shares similarities with Buss' book titled "Laker Girl," which was originally published in 2010 and later rereleased in 2013 with a new cover.
Throughout the series, viewers will recognize elements that echo the transformational period for the Lakers franchise. The narrative captures a unique blend of comedy and drama, offering audiences an engaging depiction of leadership and change within a sports organization.
