Quarterback Carousel: NFL Teams Gear Up for 2025 Season Shake-Up

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, several teams face pivotal decisions regarding their quarterback situations. The Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, and New England Patriots find themselves at critical junctures, each needing to make strategic moves to improve their rosters. Meanwhile, the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings have potential opportunities to reset or bolster their quarterback positions.

The Colts hover near playoff contention but continue to fall short. Despite their proximity to a postseason berth, the Colts have not made the playoffs since 2014, with just one victory since then. General Manager Chris Ballard admits that the roster is "not close" to being competitive. A high-ranking NFL official believes that "adding a few more pieces and supporting the quarterback (Anthony Richardson) could go a long way," emphasizing the winnable nature of their division. However, the Colts must become more assertive in free agency to bridge this gap.

The Raiders endured the league's worst quarterback scenario in 2024 and now possess nearly $100 million in cap space for 2025. Despite holding Pick 6 in the draft, an NFL team's high-ranking personnel man suggests they lack the range for a top-tier quarterback unless they trade up. Still, he notes that "they've drafted pretty well, so the roster isn't barren." Their challenge lies in wisely utilizing their cap space to address numerous team holes.

Across the league, the Patriots face desperation in securing a quarterback. With Aaron Rodgers likely departing from the Jets, they are expected to "start fresh." The Steelers, selecting No. 2 in the draft after a promising rookie season, contemplate their options, including free agent Sam Darnold. Darnold emerges as a prime free agent target, yet an AFC executive struggles to pinpoint a logical team fit for him.

Minnesota's Vikings possess promising prospects with J.J. McCarthy available on a low salary for 2025 and an array of talented receivers like Justin Jefferson. An NFL personnel evaluator remains uncertain about McCarthy's potential, admitting, "I like [McCarthy], but I have no idea what they are getting at this point." However, Coach Kevin O'Connell's leadership projects the Vikings as a team poised for sustained success.
