A fresh chapter in England's white-ball cricket unfolds as the team embarks on a tour of India, marking the beginning of a new era under the guidance of Brendon McCullum. The series kicks off with the first of five T20 matches in Kolkata on Wednesday. This tour holds particular significance as it marks the first time McCullum, who has already revitalized England's Test team, takes charge of the T20 and 50-over sides.
Jos Buttler, at 34, remains a central figure in England's cricketing landscape. McCullum, the newly appointed white-ball coach, believes Buttler could experience his "best years ahead of him" for England. Despite being part of the squad that won the 2019 World Cup and leading England to a T20 world title in 2022, Buttler has faced challenges recently. England has suffered disappointing performances, losing their last three 50-over series, with Buttler averaging just 27.00 in this format since March 2023.
"Sometimes when you get the opportunity to lead in the latter part of your career there are times when you can be desperate for success and that can create frustrations and it doesn't become quite as enjoyable." – Brendon McCullum
In a move to revitalize his leadership, McCullum emphasizes a shift in focus for Buttler. He encourages him to find enjoyment in the game and focus on elevating those around him.
"If you can let yourself go with nothing to prove other than getting the best out of those around you, sometimes that can free you up even more and you can perform really strongly." – Brendon McCullum
"He is fully on board with that. He is excited about the next little while. I am sure you will see him smiling on the field." – Brendon McCullum
England's team is near full strength on this tour, featuring quick bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer. Joe Root will miss out on the T20 squad but is poised to feature in the upcoming ODIs. These ODIs will serve as crucial preparation for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai, commencing on 19 February.
McCullum's transition to white-ball coaching follows his transformative impact on the Test team since taking over in 2022. Although appointed as white-ball coach in September, this series represents his first opportunity to lead the team in this format.
"With the talent we have there is no reason why we can't" – Brendon McCullum
"We have a batting line-up as powerful as any in the world, gun spinners, very good fielders and guys who bowl absolute rockets with the ball." – Brendon McCullum
McCullum envisions his squad playing "watchable" cricket, aiming for a style that captivates and thrills audiences. His emphasis on creating an enjoyable atmosphere for players is reflected in his observations of Buttler.
"He is smiling. That is good. He is very happy at the moment." – Brendon McCullum
