Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus has suffered a significant setback after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his left knee. The injury occurred during Arsenal's FA Cup clash with Manchester United, a match that saw the Brazilian forward exit early due to the severity of his condition. Following medical evaluations, Jesus is set to undergo surgery in the coming days, marking the beginning of a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation process.
A typical recovery time for an ACL rupture extends over nine months, posing a considerable challenge for both the player and the club. Arsenal now face a striker shortage, with Kai Havertz as the only recognized forward available. Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that the club is actively seeking to bolster their attacking options during the January transfer window.
Jesus's career at Arsenal has been marred by frequent injury setbacks and inconsistent appearances. Despite scoring six goals in his last seven appearances, he has been unable to maintain a regular presence due to injuries. Since joining Arsenal, Jesus has participated in 96 out of 132 games across all competitions, yet he has never completed more than 27 Premier League matches in a season.
The club's transfer strategy saw major additions during the off-season, with Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori joining the squad. Raheem Sterling was also secured on loan. However, with Jesus's injury, Arsenal's need for a dependable striker has become pressing, especially after selling Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace and loaning Reiss Nelson to Fulham.
Arteta has seldom relied on Jesus even when fit, as evidenced by the forward playing only 146 Premier League minutes this season. The manager emphasized the urgency of acquiring new talent during the transfer window.
"We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad," Arteta stated.
He further noted the necessity of enhancing team depth and versatility.
"We would be naive not to do that. There is an opportunity to improve the squad."
Arteta acknowledged that any new player could contribute in various ways across different positions.
"In any position. We have other issues as well. A player can bring things to a team in different ways. That is what we are trying to do."
Despite financial and logistical constraints, he expressed determination to strengthen the team.
"We have our limitations, we can do what we can do."
Arsenal's immediate focus will be on navigating upcoming fixtures without their star striker while eyeing potential recruits who can make an immediate impact.
