Commanders Face Setback as Sam Cosmi’s ACL Injury Ends Season

The Washington Commanders have been dealt a significant blow with the news that offensive lineman Sam Cosmi sustained a torn right ACL during Saturday's divisional round victory against the Detroit Lions. The injury, which occurred during running back Brian Robinson Jr.'s 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, will sideline Cosmi for the remainder of the postseason. Head Coach Dan Quinn announced the extent of Cosmi's injury on Sunday, expressing his disappointment, stating, "Really bummed on Sam."

Sam Cosmi has been an integral part of the Commanders' offensive line for several years. Before this injury, he had started every game this season, showcasing his durability and consistency. The Commanders now face the challenge of filling the void left by Cosmi's absence as they advance further into the playoffs.

Trent Scott stepped in for Cosmi during Saturday's 45-31 triumph over the Lions. With 23 career starts in his seven-year tenure, Scott has primarily played tackle for Washington this season but has also contributed as a guard on the scout team. Scott previously started at right tackle for two seasons before transitioning to guard for the 2023 season. His versatility might prove advantageous as the Commanders evaluate their options for the next matchup.

Another potential replacement for Cosmi is veteran Michael Deiter. Deiter brings experience with 35 starts in his six-year career at both guard and center positions. The team's decision will likely be influenced by upcoming matchups and tactical considerations.

The loss of Cosmi is particularly disappointing, given his performance and significance to the team. Drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2021 draft, Cosmi has consistently delivered solid contributions, including starting two games at center this season. His absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field.
