Pam Shriver, a Tennis Hall of Famer and one of the sport's most celebrated doubles players, recently faced an unexpected loss as she evacuated her home during the Los Angeles-area wildfires. Shriver, who boasts an impressive career with 21 grand slam women's doubles titles, revealed that most of her major trophies were stolen while being temporarily stored in her car during the evacuation. Despite this setback, her Brentwood home remains intact, though she awaits the restoration of heating and power.
Shriver's illustrious career is marked by her dominance in women's doubles, where she secured 20 out of her 21 titles alongside Martina Navratilova. Their formidable partnership achieved the calendar grand slam in 1984, triumphing in all four major women's doubles tournaments that year. Throughout her career, Shriver claimed seven Australian Open titles, five Wimbledon titles, five US Open titles, and four French Open titles in women's doubles. She also captured a French Open mixed doubles title in 1987 with partner Emilio Sánchez.
The esteemed tennis player was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002, solidifying her legacy in the sport. Post-retirement, Shriver transitioned into a successful career as a commentator for ESPN and Tennis Channel. She also lends her expertise as the coach of rising tennis star Donna Vekić.
The recent wildfires forced Shriver to evacuate her Brentwood residence. Despite the ordeal, her house survived the blaze. However, it was during this tumultuous period that her trophies went missing. Reflecting on the incident, Shriver said:
“This was the car that had most of my major trophies being stored until we could safely move back home.”
While the loss of these cherished trophies is undoubtedly significant, Shriver remains hopeful for their recovery. Meanwhile, she focuses on returning to normalcy at her home once utilities are restored.
