Miami Dolphins to Make History with First-Ever NFL Game in Spain

The Miami Dolphins are set to make history as they become the first NFL team to play a regular-season game in Spain. Scheduled for next season, the game will take place at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, marking a significant milestone in the NFL's global expansion efforts. The Dolphins will serve as the designated "home" team for this groundbreaking event. The exact date and their opponent will be announced in the spring.

Bernabéu Stadium, renowned as the home of Real Madrid, boasts a capacity of over 78,000. It features a retractable soccer pitch that will make way for an American football field, demonstrating the stadium's versatility. This adaptation underscores the NFL's strategy to tap into new markets and expand its global fanbase, with Spain being a prime target due to its rich sporting culture and the presence of marketing rights held by both the Dolphins and the Chicago Bears.

"This partnership with the NFL will bring one of the world's most prestigious sporting competitions to the Santiago Bernabéu, a stadium which has welcomed millions of passionate fans from around the globe to enjoy incredible sporting experiences." – Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid institutional relations director

The NFL has been actively pursuing international opportunities and has expressed interest in hosting future games in Australia. As of the 2025 season, the league can schedule up to eight regular-season games internationally. Historically, the NFL has played games in London and Toronto, but this will be its first foray into Spain.

The Dolphins' performance in international games has been less than stellar, with a 2-5 record outside the United States and four consecutive losses, including their last international game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2023. Despite missing the playoffs this season with an 8-9 record, the Dolphins are optimistic about this international opportunity.

"We are thrilled to play the NFL's inaugural game in Spain, a country of rich history, tradition and passion and home to a vibrant Dolphins fanbase." – Tom Garfinkel, Dolphins' vice chairman, president and CEO

This historic game at Bernabéu Stadium not only highlights the NFL's commitment to expanding its reach but also provides a unique opportunity for Spanish fans to experience American football firsthand. The Dolphins' participation in this event underscores their global marketing strategy and offers a chance to regain momentum on an international stage.
