Despite a rocky start, losing their first two games, the team showed resilience by winning nine of their next twelve matchups. This impressive comeback highlighted their potential, though several areas need attention if they aim for a deeper playoff run next season.
The Broncos faced challenges in their running game, which was reflected in their ranking of 24th in the NFL for rush yards over expected per play, at minus-0.06. The team struggled to find consistency, with five different players taking turns as the leading rusher in various games. Javonte Williams, the team's top running back, managed only 513 yards throughout the season. This inconsistency in the backfield is a crucial area the team needs to address moving forward.
Quarterback Russell Nix attempted 567 passes during the season, placing him sixth in the NFL for pass attempts. Despite having one of the league's best pass-blocking offensive lines, Nix's QBR was just 56.9, ranking him 18th in the league. This disparity indicates there is room for improvement in both decision-making and execution under pressure.
"Those are the most important parts of the game," said Bo Nix.
The team's struggles were also evident when facing elite quarterbacks from the AFC. The Broncos went 0-6 against top-tier opponents like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Josh Allen. To compete effectively at the highest level, their defense will need to rise to the occasion against such formidable adversaries.
Tight end Adam Trautman led his position on the team but recorded only 13 receptions for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Enhancing the performance of their tight ends could provide a much-needed boost to their offensive strategy and help diversify their attack options.
Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's performance has attracted attention beyond Denver. He interviewed for the New York Jets' head coaching position and remains a candidate for other available roles across the league. His potential departure could lead to significant changes in the Broncos' defensive strategies.
Financially, the Broncos have positioned themselves well for future seasons. With $61 million in cap space for 2025—eighth most in the league—they are well-equipped to make strategic investments in player acquisitions. The team has also added voidable years to several expensive contracts to enhance their salary cap flexibility for 2024. However, they face $33.4 million in dead money in 2025, including $32 million from releasing quarterback Russell Wilson.
Edge rusher Nik Bonitto is entering the final season of his rookie contract, and retaining him will likely require offering a competitive market deal. His performance and potential make him a valuable asset worth securing long-term.
Additionally, the Broncos are actively searching for a versatile "joker" runner-receiver combination. They hope to emulate Sean Payton's success with players like Alvin Kamara and Reggie Bush in New Orleans by finding a dynamic player who can excel in dual roles on offense.
"We know the way you get home games [in the playoffs, is to win your division]," emphasized Courtland Sutton.
Looking ahead, there are clear areas where improvement is necessary for the Broncos to build on this season's achievements. Addressing weaknesses in the running game and bolstering the passing attack will be crucial steps. Furthermore, strengthening their defense to better handle elite quarterbacks will be key to their continued success.
"I feel like the red zone and third down areas are where I can make growth, be a little bit more aware of certain situations," Bo Nix added.
