Joe Mixon, the Texans' Pro Bowl running back, faces uncertainty ahead of the crucial divisional-round playoff matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Listed as questionable due to an ankle injury, Mixon's status could significantly impact the Texans' strategy on Saturday. The injury woes began in Week 2 against the Bears, causing Mixon to miss games from Week 3 through 5. Despite his absence, the Texans managed a 2-1 record, including a notable victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 5.
The Texans have experienced success without their star running back, but Mixon's presence undeniably strengthens their offensive lineup. This season, Mixon has rushed for an impressive 1,016 yards and scored 11 touchdowns, earning him Pro Bowl honors. His contribution was evident during the Texans' wild-card round victory over the Chargers, where he rushed for 106 yards on 25 carries and secured a game-sealing touchdown.
Mixon's participation in practice remains a concern for the team. He did not practice on Thursday following a limited session on Wednesday. Historically, ankle issues have troubled Mixon, raising questions about his availability for Saturday's high-stakes game. Alongside Mixon, the Texans have also listed wide receiver Robert Woods, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, and tight end Teagan Quitoriano as questionable for the upcoming game.
Should Mixon be unable to play, the Texans are prepared to rely on backup running back Dameon Pierce. Pierce showcased his potential by rushing for 176 yards and one touchdown in a dominant performance against the Titans in Week 18. The Texans are confident in Pierce's ability to step up if Mixon is sidelined.
Mixon returned to action in Week 6 against the Patriots after recovering from his initial ankle injury. His return has been pivotal to the Texans' offensive strength; however, the persistent ankle issue poses a challenge as the team prepares to face one of their toughest opponents this season.
