Broncos’ Defensive Renaissance Fuels Playoff Surge

The Denver Broncos' defense has emerged as the cornerstone of the team's return to playoff contention, thanks to strategic offseason moves and standout performances. Under the guidance of head coach Sean Payton, the Broncos have transformed their defense into one of the most formidable units in the NFL. The team fortified its defensive line by acquiring defensive end John Franklin-Myers and signing defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, propelling them to third place in rushing yards allowed per game, a significant improvement from their 30th position last year.

Cornerback Pat Surtain II's exceptional play has put him in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation. He has successfully neutralized top receivers like Seattle's DK Metcalf, Tampa Bay's Mike Evans, and Cleveland's Jerry Jeudy. The Broncos' defense ranks first in the league in sacks and third in scoring, allowing only 18.3 points per game. Edge rusher Nik Bonitto has been instrumental, achieving first pressure on 15.5% of his pass rushes in 2023, placing him third-best in the league.

The Broncos' defense has been more aggressive under Payton's leadership, particularly with their front seven. This strategic shift has seen defensive tackle Zach Allen achieve his best season as a professional. The team allowed more than 30 points only once prior to Riley Moss' Week 12 injury, underscoring their defensive prowess.

"Pat influences everything we do, how we cover, how we align, how we decide when to pressure, everything," said Broncos' defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, highlighting Surtain's impact on the defense.

The Broncos have made significant strides since the season’s outset, improving from last place in scoring defense at 33.3 points allowed per game during the first six weeks to becoming a critical factor in their playoff aspirations. The defense's resurgence has been pivotal in propelling Denver to a five-game win streak.

"They play a different position, but I had [defensive end] Cam Jordan for all those years in New Orleans, and he was the same way. Some guys have that staying power and that stamina and strength," remarked head coach Sean Payton, drawing parallels between his current and former defensive stars.

The cohesion between Surtain and fellow defensive back Riley Moss has been vital. Moss lauded Surtain's abilities, stating:

"He's the best corner in the league."

This dynamic duo has been crucial as the Broncos prepare to face a challenging wild-card round against the high-scoring Buffalo Bills, who averaged 30.9 points per game during the regular season.

"It shouldn't be surprising. We had Wade, and VJ worked for Wade, and I think he talks to Wade all the time," commented Chris Harris Jr., reflecting on the Broncos' defensive evolution.

"Now it's just about doing it in those next [level] of games. That's what separates. But they have potential, they've got the pieces," Harris Jr. added, recognizing the team's potential to excel in postseason play.

Aqib Talib, another former Broncos player, emphasized the importance of clutch performances:

"Biggest games, biggest times, make those plays."

Talib further expressed confidence in the Broncos’ current trajectory:

"Maybe people didn't see them coming this year, but here they are…. You have defense like we had, you get those rings."

The Denver defense has indeed become a joy to coach for Vance Joseph:

"I didn't carry anger back here. I was, and am, excited for the opportunity here every day I walk in this building. And these guys play hard. They are a joy to coach."
