Suns Boost Interior with Nick Richards Acquisition as Nurkic Faces Uncertain Future

The Phoenix Suns have made a significant move in their quest to bolster their interior strength by acquiring Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornets. The trade, which also involves a second-round draft pick, brings Richards to Phoenix in exchange for Josh Okogie and three second-round selections. This transaction could potentially signal a shift in the Suns' lineup dynamics, especially for Jusuf Nurkic, whose role might be at risk.

Jusuf Nurkic, who recently fell out of the Suns' starting lineup, has shown noticeable improvement since rejoining the rotation. Over his last nine games, Nurkic has averaged an impressive 15.3 points per game (PPG) and 10.1 rebounds per game (RPG). However, with the Suns struggling with a team rebounding rate of 43.2 rebounds per 100 possessions (RP100)—tying them for the 23rd spot in the NBA—Phoenix clearly needs reinforcement in the middle.

Nick Richards, on the other hand, has been a standout performer this season. He boasts an RP100 of 17.6, contributing significantly to the Hornets' second-best rebound rate in the league at 47.0 RP100. In his nine starts this season, Richards has consistently delivered a double-double, averaging 11.3 PPG and 10.2 RPG over 27.2 minutes per game (MPG). His defensive prowess is further highlighted by his average of 1.7 blocks per game and an impressive field goal shooting percentage of 61.7%.

The Suns' need for interior help has been pressing since the formation of their Big Three: Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. The addition of Richards could provide the much-needed depth and defensive fortitude that Phoenix has been lacking. Meanwhile, Mark Williams has taken advantage of the opportunity created by Richards' departure to thrive with the Hornets. Williams, who missed the initial month-plus of the season due to injury, has started his last 11 games, paving the way for his continued growth.

The trade also raises questions about Jusuf Nurkic's future with the Suns. If Richards assumes the starting center role, Nurkic might find himself relegated to a full-time bench position, potentially impacting his fantasy basketball value. This development could also suggest that Nurkic might be on the move again if he lands on the trade block.
