Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic following a recurrence of back spasms. The 14-time major champion pulled out after shooting a first-round 77 on February 3. His team confirmed that these spasms are unrelated to the nerve issues that troubled him in past years. Woods plans to reevaluate his playing schedule after reassessing his back.
Woods, who made his return to competitive golf in December at the Hero World Challenge after a 16-month absence due to multiple back surgeries in 2015, showed initial promise by leading the field in birdies. However, his recent performances have been less encouraging. Just two weeks ago, he missed the cut by four strokes at the Farmers Insurance Open. The withdrawal from the Dubai event adds to concerns about his physical readiness.
The golfing legend has announced his decision to skip both the Genesis Open and the Honda Classic as he continues to manage his back condition.
"My doctors have advised me not to play the next two weeks, to continue my treatment and to let my back calm down." – Tiger Woods
While Woods is not eligible for the upcoming WGC-Mexico Championship, he is considering participation in either the Valspar Championship or the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Notably, Woods has never competed in the Valspar Championship, whereas he holds an impressive record as an eight-time champion of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The Masters, a tournament where Woods has historically excelled, looms on the horizon with its commencement on April 6. Traditionally, Woods has avoided playing in events scheduled in the week leading up to the prestigious tournament. His current condition raises questions about his readiness for one of golf's most revered events.
