The Los Angeles Lakers returned to the court at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday, marking their first game after a six-day hiatus caused by the raging wildfires in Southern California. This event was more than just a basketball game; it was a heartfelt tribute to the Los Angeles community and the heroic first responders battling the devastating blazes. The Lakers collaborated with the NBA, local county officials, and the San Antonio Spurs to ensure the game proceeded as planned, offering a moment of respite and solidarity in these trying times.
The wildfires have claimed at least 24 lives and destroyed over 12,000 structures, scorching 40,000 acres of land. In response to this crisis, the Lakers have united with all of Los Angeles' professional sports teams, pledging more than $8 million towards local relief efforts. Additionally, they have initiated a donation drive to gather essential personal items and non-perishable food, which will continue through Saturday. Fans can contribute at the team's home games this week or at their practice facility in El Segundo, California.
The Lakers’ commitment to their community extends beyond financial aid. Many players, including guard Gabe Vincent, were personally affected by the fires and forced to evacuate their homes. Despite these challenges, the team stood resolute in their mission to support those affected. Before the game, they donned black warmup shirts adorned with the L.A. Fire Department's emblem and the message "Thank you, first responders" as a gesture of gratitude.
"Our hearts are those who have suffered from this horrible tragedy." – Lawrence Tanter
Gabe Vincent praised the first responders for their bravery and dedication during this crisis.
"We definitely want to give a shout out to the first responders who are putting their lives on the line right now to protect our community." – Gabe Vincent
Head Coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged the team's responsibility during such times.
"We understand our responsibility. We want to do whatever we can in this profession. We're coming with great empathy and grace, and if our role is to provide entertainment and inspiration, then that's our role. But while we're doing that, we're thinking about all the devastation and all people are dealing with. It's just been horrible." – Erik Spoelstra
Reggie Redick, a pivotal figure in the Lakers organization, expressed his pride in how the team has responded to the tragedy.
"I'm awfully proud to be a part of the Lakers organization and our response. It just makes you feel proud to be with the Lakers." – Reggie Redick
"Truthfully, I think it was our best three days in the gym – non games, of course – but our best three days in the gym since the first three days of training camp. It was the right spirit, we got a lot done and the guys were super connected." – Reggie Redick
Redick emphasized the importance of unity and support within the team and its impact on bringing hope to their community.
"I think a group functions best when you draw strength from each other. Then it's our job to go give strength, and give hope and give joy. Sports are a lot of things and sports can certainly provide an escape and a distraction and hopefully sports, and tonight, can provide some joy as well." – Reggie Redick
He also highlighted the deep connection between the Lakers and the city of Los Angeles.
"Sports really work well when the team, the organization has a connection to the city and the fans feel a connection to the team. And then it just flows in some sort of eternal circle of that. The Lakers have that with the city of Los Angeles. Having played here before and lived here, I'm well aware of that relationship. And part of the reason I wanted to coach here was to participate in that." – Reggie Redick
Before tip-off, Eric Smith, the team's public address announcer, voiced his appreciation for first responders and extended his sympathies to those affected by the fires.
"We're so thankful for the first responders, but we ache for the victims. The smoke will lift and they will return and rebuild, because this is LA. Today we all stand together (as) one team, one Los Angeles." – Eric Smith
