Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s prolific all-rounder, remains barred from bowling after failing a reassessment of his bowling action in Chennai, India last month. Despite this setback, Shakib is still eligible to participate as a specialist batter in all forms of cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that the suspension extends to all domestic competitions outside of Bangladesh and international cricket.
Shakib, who retired from T20 internationals, has likely played his last Test for Bangladesh. With no Tests scheduled before the Champions Trophy commences on February 19, his focus has shifted towards batting. He plans to retire from international cricket after the Champions Trophy in March.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) originally suspended Shakib from bowling after investigating his action during his sole appearance for Surrey in the County Championship last season. On-field umpires flagged his action during a match against Somerset in September, leading to tests at Loughborough University. Results showed that Shakib's elbow extension exceeded the 15-degree threshold permitted by ECB regulations, prompting the suspension in December.
A veteran in the cricketing world, Shakib has made significant contributions to Bangladesh's cricket team. Over his career, he has played 71 Tests, 247 one-day internationals, and 129 T20s for Bangladesh. His experience and skill have made him a pivotal figure in the team’s lineup, and his transition to focusing on batting is anticipated with keen interest.
Despite the challenges with his bowling action, Shakib remains an influential player. His commitment to continue playing as a batter underscores his adaptability and enduring passion for the game. As he approaches retirement, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely during the upcoming Champions Trophy, which will mark the end of an illustrious international career.
