Deshaun Watson, the Cleveland Browns’ star quarterback, finds himself sidelined once again after undergoing surgery for a torn right Achilles tendon. This marks the second consecutive year Watson’s season ended prematurely due to injury, initially tearing his Achilles on October 20. The Browns, who have heavily invested in Watson, face significant financial and strategic decisions moving forward.
Watson, in whom the Browns invested a massive five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract before the 2022 season, has played only 19 games since the team traded three first-round picks to acquire him in March 2022. The Browns owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons, with cap hits soaring to $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
The quarterback's recent surgery was performed after he consulted Dr. Robert Anderson. His recovery is anticipated to take at least seven months, potentially impacting his availability for the upcoming season. However, Browns general manager Andrew Berry assured that Watson's setback would not drastically alter the team's offseason plans for the quarterback position.
"I think the reality of it is that room, it will look different next year," said Berry, hinting at potential changes in the Browns' quarterback lineup.
The Browns recently restructured Watson's contract to include void years, pushing his dead salary cap hit into 2030. As they hold the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the team has options to explore new talent while managing their financial commitments.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, selected in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, is currently the only other quarterback under contract for the 2025 season. However, he struggled in his two starts this season and missed the final eight games after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder. Meanwhile, Bailey Zappe, who played in the season finale, is a restricted free agent, and Jameis Winston, who started seven games following Watson's injury, enters free agency as well.
The Browns' quarterback room is poised for transformation as they navigate these challenges. The organization must weigh its options carefully to ensure competitive performance while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
