Alexander Zverev, the world-renowned tennis player, is on a mission to clinch a hat-trick of Nitto ATP Finals crowns, setting the stage for what he hopes will be a breakthrough season. This ambition comes as Zverev seeks his first grand slam singles title, an achievement that has eluded him despite numerous accolades. In June 2022, Zverev's career was on a similar trajectory, yet recent developments have reignited hope for the German athlete.
Zverev has been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of four, an unpreventable disease that occurs when the immune system attacks pancreatic beta cells. He admits he doesn't "remember a life" without the illness. Despite this challenge, Zverev has excelled on the tennis court, recently returning to a career-high ranking of world No. 1. He also holds the distinction of being Rafael Nadal's final opponent at Roland Garros, having knocked the Spaniard out in the first round.
“I felt really close to winning my first grand slam. I was extremely close to world No. 1,” – Alex Zverev
The tennis star began the year with a significant win over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. This victory marked the beginning of a strong season in 2024, where Zverev reestablished himself at the forefront of major tournaments. However, his journey has not been without controversy. In October 2023, Zverev faced accusations of physical abuse during an argument in Berlin in May 2020. Although he denied the allegations and lodged an appeal, he eventually paid a fine of €200,000.
“Then after that there were obviously a lot of question marks, whether I was ever going be back to this level again, whether I was ever going be competing for grand slams, competing in the biggest tournaments in the world, if I would be even able to play these kind of guys again.” – Alex Zverev
Despite having been a professional player for over a decade and securing multiple Masters 1000 titles, Zverev has yet to capture a grand slam title. He has only reached two major finals, losing both. Yet his determination remains unwavering as he continues to compete at the highest levels.
“I’m happy (with) the level I am, I’m happy where I am in general with my tennis life,” – Alex Zverev
Zverev's resilience is evident not only on the court but also in his perspective on living with diabetes. He acknowledges that while it is not an illness anyone wishes for, it has become an integral part of his life journey.
“That was more difficult for me back then but now I feel like it’s just part of my life. Of course, it’s not an illness that anybody wants to have. I don’t want to have it, you know, millions of other kids don’t want to have it, but it’s ok. It’s the journey that life brings to you.” – Alex Zverev
Zverev aspires to be a role model for other children facing similar challenges and draws inspiration from those who have triumphed before him.
“He made it so I can as well” – Alex Zverev
“I’m happy to hopefully have other kids have this kind of role model” – Alex Zverev
Looking ahead, Zverev is optimistic about his future prospects in tennis. He is focused on making significant strides in his career and achieving milestones that have so far remained just out of reach.
“You never know – anything can happen. Of course, like in 2022, anything can happen. I do feel more ready than ever to make that next step.” – Alex Zverev
