49ers Shuffle: Hargrave’s Departure and Samuel’s Staying Power

49ers Shuffle: Hargrave’s Departure and Samuel’s Staying Power

The San Francisco 49ers are set to make significant roster adjustments as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. The team plans to release defensive tackle Javon Hargrave with a post-June 1 designation when the new league year starts in March. This strategic move is part of their broader plan to manage salary cap implications and team dynamics. Meanwhile, wide receiver Deebo Samuel's future with the team remains secure, following a contract restructuring that would incur substantial financial penalties if altered. Additionally, left tackle Trent Williams has confirmed his intention to return for his 15th season.

Javon Hargrave's impending release comes after the 49ers restructured his four-year, $84 million contract in 2023. However, his time on the field was cut short due to a partially torn right triceps, limiting him to just three games in 2024. The decision to release him will result in $8.6 million in dead money in 2025 and a more significant $17.485 million in 2026. Despite these financial repercussions, head coach Kyle Shanahan believes that moving on from Hargrave is in the team's best interest.

"I feel there's some options out there that can end up being a better option in the situation that we're in for our team," said Kyle Shanahan.

In contrast, Deebo Samuel remains an integral part of the 49ers' plans. Having restructured his contract in September, the 49ers would face a daunting $31.55 million dead money hit if they were to trade or release him before June 1, 2025. Samuel himself has expressed unwavering confidence in his future with the team.

Meanwhile, Trent Williams, a pivotal figure since joining the team in 2021, has announced his return for the 2025 season. Williams, aged 36, missed the final seven games of the last season due to a bruised left ankle but remains committed to contributing to the team's success.

The 49ers are also undergoing significant coaching staff changes. With current vacancies for defensive and special teams coordinators, Shanahan has chosen to promote Klay Kubiak to the position of offensive coordinator. Kubiak, who joined the 49ers in 2021, has served in various roles including defensive quality control coach and offensive passing game specialist. Although Shanahan will continue as the primary playcaller, Kubiak will significantly influence game plans and occasionally call plays.

"I think Klay's done as much as anyone on offense these last two years," commented Shanahan, highlighting Kubiak's contributions.

For the defensive coordinator role, Brandon Staley emerges as a strong contender after interviewing for the position last year. Shanahan also expressed a desire to retain special teams coach Brian Schneider in another capacity within the organization.
