Scheffler Prioritizes Healing, Withdraws from American Express

Scottie Scheffler, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year and FedEx Cup champion, has announced his withdrawal from next week's American Express tournament. This decision comes as he seeks additional time for his injured right hand to heal after suffering a puncture wound while cooking dinner on Christmas Day. Scheffler underwent surgery to remove glass fragments from his palm, and he aims to return to competition at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am later this month.

The 27-year-old golfer initially faced a recovery period estimated at three to four weeks. As a result, he was already not scheduled to participate in the ongoing Sony Open in Hawaii or the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California. The injury has sidelined Scheffler since the PGA Tour's 2025 season opener, the Sentry, which he missed, and that was won by Hideki Matsuyama in Kapalua, Hawaii.

In a statement regarding his decision, Scheffler emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health. He stated, "After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week's American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal." His commitment to recovery reflects a professional approach to ensuring he returns at full strength.

Scheffler’s remarkable achievements in 2024 include winning seven times on tour, marking him as the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2007 to achieve such a feat in a single season. His accolades also include two Masters titles and a gold medal won at the Paris Olympics. He recently secured his second green jacket at the Masters and claimed victory at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial event held in the Bahamas in December.

Looking ahead, Scheffler expresses optimism about his return to competitive play. He hopes to start his 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, scheduled for January 30 to February 2 in Pebble Beach, California. "I am still hopeful to begin my 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am," he noted.
