Jalen Hurts returned to practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Eagles prepared for their wild-card playoff clash against the Green Bay Packers. The quarterback’s return marks his first practice since sustaining a concussion during the first quarter of the game against the Washington Commanders on December 22. Despite missing the Eagles’ final two regular-season games, Hurts has been actively involved at the facility, working closely with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on this week’s game plan.
Hurts' absence from the field has seen backup quarterbacks step up in his place. After sustaining his concussion, Hurts briefly returned to start against the Cowboys but was replaced by Tanner McKee following a couple of hard hits in the second half. McKee went on to start against the Giants, delivering a strong performance with two touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Kenny Pickett filled in against Washington but was sidelined due to rib injuries, adding to the Eagles' quarterback challenges.
The NFL's health and safety protocols dictate that a team physician can clear a player for contact only after they have shown they can participate in noncontact activities without symptoms recurring. Hurts is progressing through these stages, and multiple sources have expressed optimism about his potential participation against Green Bay. His ability to play hinges on completing all concussion protocol stages, including receiving clearance from an independent neurological consultant.
Left tackle Jordan Mailata, who has experienced similar situations due to concussions, expressed enthusiasm about Hurts' return to practice.
"It was awesome to have him back. He came back with high energy." – Jordan Mailata
Mailata also noted Hurts' performance during practice.
"He came out there and didn't miss a beat." – Jordan Mailata
Head Coach Nick Sirianni remains tight-lipped about the quarterback lineup should Hurts start, declining to disclose who would serve as the No. 2 QB. Despite Hurts' recent absence from gameplay, Sirianni is confident that the quarterback will not show signs of rust upon his return.
