The Philadelphia 76ers are at a special crossroads as they head into the next NBA Draft. The front office, led by the architect of the team’s rough 24-58 campaign, is doing all it can to keep that No. 3 pick in the draft. They were hit hard by a Covid-19 related campaign, coming 26th in the league on defensive rating. That’s their worst finish since the depths of their early “Process” era. Joel Embiid, who has been recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, played only 19 games last season, raising concerns about the team’s future lineup and strategies.
In preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft, they’ve put together a “fictional” list of five players they would take if they opt to keep the No. 3 overall pick. With a top-tier pick guaranteed, things bode well for the team to get their successor. They possess an early second-rounder at No. 35, providing even more opportunities to bolster their division-leading roster. This dual focus on high-value picks reflects the organization’s desire to rebuild and reinforce its foundation for the next season.
Draft Strategy and Potential Picks
The 76ers have the biggest decision to make with the No. There has been considerable speculation about whether they will retain this valuable asset or trade it for a veteran player who can contribute immediately. Retaining the pick would allow them to select from a pool of promising talent, potentially addressing gaps in their roster, particularly in defense and size.
The team’s poor defensive rating emphasizes the need for strategic picks that can help fortify their backcourt and overall defensive capabilities. Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain, as good as they are, are smallish for their respective positions. This has led to plenty of debate on who they should draft to give them more size and defensive ability next to them. Given that public posture, the 76ers have almost certainly put together their own “fictitious” list of five players. They’re targeting candidates who come with exceptional defensive talents and easily adapt to the organization’s changing plan of attack.
With their early second-rounder at No. 35, the 76ers could further enhance their roster by selecting another player who can contribute effectively. This selection would go a long way towards addressing depth concerns. Equally important, it can lock in a strong talent that has fallen through the cracks in earlier rounds.
Roster Challenges and Free Agency Decisions
Now, as the team turns their focus to the draft, they’ve got some other pressing roster decisions to make. On top of that, Joel Embiid’s continued recovery fuels uncertainty for the franchise’s short-term future. His restricted minutes a year ago will require a deliberate approach. We’re doing our best to develop a corresponding supporting cast that will take pressure off him upon his return.
Kelly Oubre Jr. is heading into restricted free agency, which further complicates matters. At the same time, Guerschon Yabusele is hitting unrestricted free agency. Beyond simply making the decision to re-sign these players, the team will need to consider any possible trades and acquisitions that they could make. Meanwhile, Quentin Grimes and Guerschon Yabusele were left facing uncertain futures with the franchise. As always, management is looking very closely at how to best fortify the team going forward.
George had an incredibly difficult rookie season in Philadelphia. This has led to increased scrutiny on his immediate future with the team, and whether or not he can be included as part of the solution going ahead. Meanwhile, Michael Porter Jr.’s game in Denver appears to have plateaued, prompting speculation about whether a trade could benefit both parties.
Looking Ahead
Needless to say, the 76ers’ front office knows improvement is imperative after last season’s disappointment. The squad’s catastrophic failure across the board, especially on defense, has exposed this glaring need that can no longer be ignored. As they prepare for the draft, their decision-making process will be vital in determining the future trajectory of the franchise.
The stakes are equally high. With the No. 3 pick retained, you’re in a position to draft a true game-changer that can make plays on both ends of the court. Doing so in concert with savvy plays in free agency and with the trade market will be key to building a roster capable of competing.
