The 2025 NFL Draft will start the same way, on Thursday night, in Green Bay. This year’s event is particularly historic, as it will be the first draft to take place in Wisconsin in more than 85 years! This historic event brings excitement to local fans and showcases some unprecedented trends in the league as teams prepare for one of their most critical weekends of the year.
For the first time since the common draft era started in 1967, there are no trades of first-round picks before the draft. What a spectacular and historic moment in draft history! As of three days before the event, we have seen enough surprising stability that we can be confident in these being the top selections. This situation has generated a lot of buzz for the next draft. It’s got one of the most supremely skilled lists of priority free agents (PFAs) we’ve seen in years.
Of those teams, the Houston Texans have made waves with the most grandiose strategy. The Texans are set to make him one of the highest-paid coaches, locking him into a five-year, $54 million contract extension, though his buyout isn’t too prohibitive. Their general manager, Nick Caserio, has evidently been maxing out his trade cards. To the shock of everyone, he had executed 22 trades immediately prior to or during the draft. The Texans firmly are committed to “move in silence” this offseason. They’re rumoredly still looking to work out a possible trade with the Eagles or Browns.
That puts the Browns in perfect position to make their move with the ninth pick in this year’s draft. Yet they’ve never led the league in drafting quarterbacks, either since their return in 1999. This season’s draft will put that plan to the ultimate test, as they look to add more young talent to a developing roster.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider has received praise for his moves in 17 years with the franchise. In that vein, earlier this week he traded for quarterback Drew Lock, a deal that likely clears a path to trading quarterback Michael Howell.
As excitement continues to grow, experts are already predicting who will be the real difference makers. Ohio State quarterback Will Howard expressed confidence in Emeka Egbuka, stating, “One guy I’ve been saying over and over, and I think he’s a special guy, is Emeka Egbuka.” He emphasized Egbuka’s exceptional skills: “He’s got unbelievable route-running ability, he’s got great speed, he’s got some of the best hands that I’ve been around.”
An unnamed general manager lamented the brutal competition for this year’s draft class. He even went as far as to say, “And I don’t think it’s close.” An NFL executive hinted at a potential bold move: “If they like Shedeur, they’re taking him at 3.”
