Packers Lose Key Player as Elgton Jenkins Lands on Injured Reserve

In a corresponding move, the Green Bay Packers have placed Elgton Jenkins on injured reserve. He broke his fibula and tibia in their crushing 10-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. After an exciting first half, Jenkins was carted off the field just before halftime. He’ll be out for at least the next four games as he begins his recovery.

Jenkins followed up a stellar conversion to the center position this offseason after establishing himself as one of the NFL’s best left guards. Sadly for him, he’s recently had a misstep that may prove costly to his first playing season and potentially his future contract negotiations as well. As he heads into the last year of his contract, the Packers need to accelerate talks of his future with the organization. This sense of urgency is even more critical given the severity of his injury.

On the field During Monday’s joint practice with the Patriots, Sean Rhyan was first in line to replace Jenkins at center after that injury. Perhaps the only known quantity up front, the Packers’ offensive line has been riddled by injuries this season. Other players such as Aaron Banks and Zach Tom have missed significant time due to injury. This situation has put additional pressure on the remaining roster members as they strive to maintain their performance amidst these challenges.

Jenkins’ contributions to the squad have been monumental since he arrived to the Packers. His versatility and skill set allowed him to be a jack of all trades on the offensive line. Now, as he begins the most important recovery process of his life, the team has to recalibrate its strategy while prepping for its next opponents.

The Packers need to keep a special eye on Jenkins’ rehab progress. Getting ready for the next stage of their season without him will be important. This team has an uphill battle without him, their unquestioned leader. Unfortunately, that may jeopardize their chances for success in the coming weeks.
