Banchero to Miss Game Against Nets Due to Groin Strain

Star Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero was a late scratch for Friday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. He’ll miss time as he’s on the injured list with a left groin strain. The injury occurred late in the first half of Wednesday night’s win against the New York Knicks. An MRI revealed it on Thursday. In turn, Banchero will now be listed as day-to-day and will be evaluated daily to determine the course of his recovery.

Banchero has certainly been the engine for the Magic this season. He’s shown those signs this season, as he is averaging 21.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game thus far. His offensive contributions and his defensive hustle have been key in the Wizards’ recent rise to playoff contention. It was an incredibly difficult way to start the season as the Magic opened up with a 1-4 record. They have recovered spectacularly, winning five of their last seven matches.

Banchero’s absence is a huge blow to the Magic — I’d even call him irreplaceable. They need to be ready for a formidable Nets squad. His ability to score and make plays for others really come through in close contests. His unparalleled leadership on the court is a game-changer.

The Magic’s medical and training staff will have to carefully manage Banchero’s process of recovery. Labeling him as day-to-day indicates that there’s optimism he can return fairly quickly. The nonprofit is treading lightly, taking extra precautions to ensure he makes a full recovery before returning to duty.
